Johnson in 2007

Birth Name: Dwayne Douglas Johnson

Place of Birth: Hayward, Alameda, California, United States

Date of Birth: May 2, 1972

Ethnicity:
*father – African-Canadian/Black Nova Scotian, small amount of Irish
*mother – Samoan

Dwayne Johnson, also credited as The Rock, is an American actor, producer, businessperson, professional wrestler, and American/Canadian professional football player.

He is the son of Ata Johnson (born Feagaimaleata or Mataniufeagaimaleata Fitisemanu Maivia) and Rocky Johnson (born Wayde Douglas Bowles), a Canadian and American wrestler. A picture of Dwayne at a young age, along with his parents, can be found here.

Dwayne’s father, who was black (African-Canadian), was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada, of Black Nova Scotian heritage. Black Nova Scotians are descended from African-Americans who left the U.S. after the American Revolution, having sided with the British. Dwayne’s paternal grandparents were both black, and Dwayne has stated that he also found out that he has some “strong Irish blood” on his father’s side. Dwayne has also been said to have First Nations (Native Canadian) ancestry, although it is not clear if that is accurate.

Dwayne’s mother is Samoan. Dwayne spent some time growing up in Grey Lynn, New Zealand, where he was able to learn about his Pacific Islander heritage. He has a tribal “pe’a” chest-and-arm tattoo.

Dwayne was selected People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2016. He is the second non-white man, and the second man of significant African ancestry, to have been given this title by the magazine (Denzel Washington, in 1996, is the first, and Idris Elba, in 2018, John Legend, in 2019, and Michael B. Jordan, in 2020, are the others, fitting both criteria). Dwayne is also the first Polynesian man to have been given the title.

Dwayne is married to singer and songwriter Lauren Hashian. He has a daughter with his former wife, producer Dany Garcia; and two children with Lauren. Dany works on many of Dwayne’s films.

Dwyane’s paternal grandfather was James Henry A. Bowles (the son of John W. Bowles and Lila/Lilla/Lillian Jones). James was born in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. John was the son of Stephen Bowles and Charlotte. Lila was the daughter of Henry Jones and Mary Jane.

Dwyane’s paternal grandmother was Lillian Gay (the daughter of Alfred Nathan Gay and Isabelle/Isabel/Isabell/Isabella Sickles). Lillian was born in Amherst, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Alfred was the son of Delia. Isabelle was born on Prince Edward Island, the daughter of William Benjamin Sickles and Hannah Colecraft.

Dwyane’s maternal grandfather was named Fanene Leifi Pita Maivia (the son of Rebecca Fanene). Fanene was a famous Samoan pro-wrestler, under the name Peter Maivia. He was from American Samoa. In Dwayne’s early wrestling days, he was known as Rocky Maivia, a combination of the nicknames of his father, Rocky Johnson, and his grandfather, Peter Maivia.

Dwayne’s maternal grandmother was named Ofelia “Lia” Fuataga. Ofelia was born in Lalomanu, Aleipata, Western Samoa (then under New Zealand rule, now independent), and was a wrestling promoter.

Birth Name: Zachary Levi Pugh

Place of Birth: Lake Charles, Louisiana, U.S.

Date of Birth: September 29, 1980

Ethnicity: English, French, German, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish, Swiss, remote Dutch

Zachary Levi is an American actor, director, and singer. He plays Shazam! in the DC Cinematic Universe.

Zachary was born Zachary Levi Pugh, and is the son of Susan Marie (Hoctor) and Darrell Pugh. His birth name is pronounced pew. He has English, French, German, Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish, Swiss [Swiss-French and Swiss-German], and remote Dutch, ancestry. Several of his family lines go back to Colonial America.

While Zachary was born in Louisiana, he has no family ancestry in the state. He was raised in Ventura, California. His father is from Minnesota and his mother was raised in California.

Zachary uses his middle name as his stage name, as he believed “Pugh” was too unusual-sounding. A decade after he became a known actor, English actor siblings Toby Sebastian (born Sebastian Toby Pugh) and Florence Pugh, who are not related to Zachary, also became well-known; Florence kept the surname, while Toby, like Zachary, uses his first two names.

Zachary is sometimes incorrectly believed to be Jewish, because of his middle/stage name Levi. He is not of Jewish heritage or religion, and is a devout Christian.

Zachary’s patrilineal line evidently traces back to Francois De Puy, a Huguenot from Calais, France, and to his Dutch wife, Geertje Willemse Van Boerum, who was from Amsterdam.

Zachary’s paternal grandfather was Alton Lester Pugh (the son of Herman Lester Pugh and Delila Mae Lovin, whose family’s surname was originally Loving). Alton was born in Kansas. Herman was the son of Martin Shaner Pugh and Louisa/Louis Jane Clason. Delila was the daughter of Robert Lee Lovin and Mary Ellen Montgomery.

Zachary’s paternal grandmother was Alice Maureen Repp (the daughter of Harry Orris Repp and Merle Marie Carruth). Alice was born in Wisconsin. Harry was the son of Jacob Orris/Oris Repp and Lucy Ann Thurber. Merle’s father was Wallace Bradley Carruth, whose father was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and whose mother was born in Ontario, Canada, to English parents. Merle’s mother was Elizabeth Evangeline “Lizzie” Bucher, whose parents, Heinrich Caspar “Henry” Bucher and Mary Ann Welchle, were Swiss.

Zachary’s maternal grandfather was Arthur Edward Hoctor, Jr. (the son of Arthur Edward Hoctor and Louise F./P. Labadie). Zachary’s grandfather Arthur was born in Ohio. Zachary’s great-grandfather Arthur was the son of Thomas Francis Hoctor, who was born in New York, to parents from Tipperary, Ireland, and of Mary Minnie A. McDonald, whose father and maternal grandparents were Irish. Louise was born in Ohio, the daughter of John Labadie, who was French, and of Alice Amelia Flory, who was born in Ohio, to French parents.

Zachary’s maternal grandmother was Patricia Lee Jones (the daughter of John Ralph Jones and Juliet Louise Schenck). Patricia was born in Missouri. John was the son of Lewis R. Jones, whose father was Welsh and whose mother was German, and of Anna/Annie Coughey, whose parents were Irish. Juliet was the daughter of Henry B. Schenck and Minnie M. Kuehl, and her grandparents were all German.

Rebecca Hall

Hall in 2011, photo by Featureflash / Shutterstock.com

Place of Birth: London, England

Date of Birth: May 3, 1982

Ethnicity:
*English (father)
*African-American, Dutch (mother)

Rebecca Hall is a British-American actress. She is known for her roles in the films Vicky Cristina Barcelona, The Gift, and Godzilla Vs. Kong, among many others. Her father, Peter Hall, was English-born, and was a director who founded the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her mother, Maria Ewing, is American-born, and is an opera singer and actress. Rebecca is married to American actor Morgan Spector, with whom she has one child.

Rebecca’s father was of English descent. Rebecca’s maternal grandfather was born to parents who were both of part African ancestry; he also had possible Scottish and Sioux Native American ancestry. Rebecca’s maternal grandmother, who was caucasian, was Dutch.

Rebecca’s half-siblings are producer Christopher Hall, actress, musician, and journalist Jennifer Caron Hall, stage director Edward Hall, set designer Lucy Hall, and actress Emma Hall. Christopher and Jennifer’s mother is actress Leslie Caron.

Rebecca’s paternal grandfather was Reginald Edward Arthur Hall (the son of George Hall and Edith Kate Mitchell). Reginald was born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. George was the son of John Hall and Mahala Vincent. Edith was the daughter of John Mitchell and Elizabeth Ann Tindall.

Rebecca’s paternal grandmother was Grace Florence Pamment (the daughter of Frederick William Pamment and Phyllis Louisa Wilson). Grace was born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. Frederick was the son of Charles Edwin Pamment, Jr. and Jane Linsey. Phyllis was the daughter of Henry Wilson and Elizabeth.

Rebecca’s maternal grandfather, Norman Isaac Ewing, was born in Washington, D.C., c. 1892-1894 (most likely in 1894). Both of Norman’s parents were of at least part African ancestry. Norman was the son of John William Ewing and Hattie Norman, who married on July 16, 1885 in Washington, D.C. On the 1910 U.S. Census, John is listed as born in Tennessee and Hattie, the daughter of Isaac Franklin Norman and Amanda Jane Myers, is listed as born in Ohio.

On the 1910 U.S. Census, Norman’s “race” is listed as “Mulatto” (mixed race), and so is the “race” of both of his parents. At this time, Norman’s birth place is listed as Virginia, and his residence place is listed as Washington, D.C.

On the 1915 South Dakota State Census, Norman’s race is listed as “Indian” (Native American), and on the 1920 U.S. Census, his “race” is again listed as “Indian”. On the 1920 U.S. Census, his birthplace is listed as Washington, D.C., while his father’s birthplace is listed as Oregon and his mother’s birthplace is listed as Washington, D.C. It is perhaps notable that the woman he was married to at this time, Margaret “Maggie” Culbertson (who was not Rebecca’s maternal grandmother), is listed as “Indian” on the 1920 Census also. It is not clear if Norman had documented Native American ancestry. Some African-Americans told census takers that their race was “Indian.”

Rebecca’s maternal grandmother was Hermina Maria Veraar (the daughter of Robertus Veraar and Hermina M. Vernellen). Rebecca’s grandmother Hermina was Dutch, and was born in Amsterdam. She was white.
